IoT ENABLING TECHNOLOGY

The original idea was to integrate the nodes of a Wi-Fi Full Mesh network into LED lighting fixtures and to provide Wi-Fi connectivity “seamlessly” with lighting systems, be them industrial, commercial or public service.

Reios did invest in its long experience in designing and building custom lighting systems, for inside and outside use, to develop a complete, robust Mesh Wi-Fi infrastructure that uses custom components to grant unparalleled robustness and exclusive edge computing capabilities.

It means that Reios WiFi&Light® architecture does data processing locally, having a lot of power distributed along the network nodes, speeding up tremendously Application Response Time and effective Data transfer to the Central Enterprise IT systems.

Data transfer is done through MQTT protocols, which is designed to optimize, inter alia, Cloud systems data delivery.

PLATFORM BACKGROUND

A Wireless Mesh Network (WMNs) is a decentralized mesh network made of nodes (router mesh and client mesh), mutually connected by a link, overcoming therefore the relationship client/server, typical of a star type traditional wireless network. The mesh network is instead collaborative, and each node is capable to communicate directly with each other node, near (one-hop) or far (multi-hop).

This type of network is dynamically configuring itself and therefore is very robust: each node is capable to set and keep automatically the connection within the network, finding independently a solution when part of the network is damaged. 

Mesh routers with gateway/bridge capabilities make also possible to specialize WMNs in specific type of networks: Wi-Fi, Wi-Max, Hyper-LAN, BLE, sensors or cellular networks. This way it allows to implement a new range of applications like Wide Band Wi-Fi, IoT Services, Smart Cities Services (for universities, shops, transport controls, etc.).

WiFi&Light opens the Wi-Fi WMNs to a large variety of applications.

Robustness

If one or more nodes, for any reasons, will no longer work properly, the mesh network is designed to replace such nodes with the others still working properly in order to recreate the appropriate path to transfer data.

Extensive coverage of Wi-Fi signal

The circumstance that each lighting fixture is hosting a mesh node means the distance between one node and the nearest one rarely exceeds 15 meters in manufacturing plants. Any device therefore is very close to the nearest node, thereby the signal strength and the average data speed are high in any corners of the plant.

RULES AND FUNCTIONS

Infrastructure rules:

Connectivity function:

It is crucial for the internal operation of the WiFi&Light (lamp to lamp, lamp to edge micro-server, etc.) and for the external connectivity (IoT, other devices, LANs, Internet). The system implements both, while providing consistent internal connectivity and reliable external connectivity user experience.

Sensors integration function:

Sensor integration is a crucial part of the system and conceptually it can be divided in:

• sensors directly related to lighting functions (i.e. light sensors),
• sensors not directly related to lighting functions (i.e. proximity and passage sensors),

• other sensors dedicated to IoT services.

Actuation function:

This function is related, but not limited, to the Lighting function. The system is designed to be able to integrate and control other electrical devices, both wireless and wired, directly and can be expanded to host other wireless radio technologies as well thanks to its lamp-as-IoT-hub approach (i.e. 802.15.4 and BLE)

Lighting function:

Industrial Indoor/Outdoor LED Lighting is the natural field of application of the system.

It can be summarized as:

• Lighting system Power Efficiency,
• Automatic (Intelligent) Dimming,
• Predictive maintenance,
• Robustness (intrinsic and as fault detection).

Such distinction is just for clarification, since the system

is designed to enable a very wide range of IoT Services

Combining hardware, firmware, software and edge computing architectures, SunComm offers proprietary & complete vertical IoT solutions to allow:

• SF-IoT module for connectivity and IoT devices management ( through SF-EC)

The SunFlower MAD device is the Mesh node. It creates the full Mesh network thanks to its interaction with the other closest Mesh nodes (MeshAntennaDevice).

The Mesh node allows the connection of the network to the external environment and to the internet. The device transmits the rules managed by the ED server to the Mesh network.

The heart of Reios WiFi&Light® network is the SunFlower, a full Mesh node for Edge Computing, designed by Reios: a full fledge mini-computer, compact, addressable, programmable

DEVICES

The ED – Enabling Device – is an Edge micro-server and allows configuration, management and monitoring of the nodes of the Wifi&Light Full Mesh System. Through a LAN connection, can configure and control Wi-Fi LED luminaires and upload the Apps dedicated to IoT services.

Family of sensors that detect the light level of the environment, the presence and the passage of people and things within the area. The Wi-Fi-connection is obtained through WAD. It can also be extended to the use of all the foreseen environmental sensors.

The device sGate is a type of Mesh network node. It works as BLE-Observer and Wi-Fi-Gateway with MQTT messages. It is equipped with an omnidirectional WiFi and BLE Antenna at 2,4 gHz.

The WAD Wi-Fi Node is a standard client device that can be used both for the dimming of the LED luminaires and for the connection of IoT sensors and actuators via the Full Mesh Network to which it is connected.

The IAD Router Node is a Mesh node used, through wired connection to a switch, to connect WiFi&Light infrastructure to the Cloud. It also has the same function and characteristics of a MAD. It can be placed on board lighting or ‘stand-alone’.

The MAD – Mesh Antenna Device – is the Mesh node. It is integrated in the lighting fixtures or it can be ‘stand-alone’. It creates the Wi-Fi Full Mesh Network thanks to its interaction with the other closest MADs. The MADs allows the connection of the Clients, be they sensors, actuators or IP devices, to the network in all the wireless standards (BLE, ZigBee, Lora, Sub-Giga, etc.) The Wi-Fi Mesh is compliant with 802.11ac standard.
